Our Floating Shelves

We’ve actually had these danish rosewood shelves up for some time but reconfigured the layout last weekend.   This wall previously had large kitchen cabinets that functioned as a pantry in with the base cabinets and glass fronted upper cabinets served as storage for spirits and glassware.  It was practical but really encroached in the space in what is a modestly sized kitchen. Also the massing of more white cabinets across the room from the rest of the kitchen really hemmed in the whole room.

These shelves being open let the light through to the room and adjoining hall. And of course in themselves are pleasant to look at. A future update may include overhead lighting similar to that over wall hung art. The electrical connection from the in-cabinet lighting of the previous cabinets is still in the floor.

The open shelving makes for a bit more room when walking past this wall either to the stairs, the patio door or to the living room. This most recent configuration improves on the original in that we removed one of the rosewood cabinets and raised the other two up. Of course being in the kitchen the shelves are ideal for storing glassware, kitchen tools, fruit and dried goods. We keep our cookbooks close at hand and use the higher shelves as a bit of a rotating display of fun souvenirs.

The larger of the three cabinets is now hung on a wall in the living room with a few extra shelves that we had stored. This tambour door cabinet must have been used as a stereo cabinet in the past as it has an access hole in the bottom for cables. I may move the stereo system to this corner of the room and keep the turn table in the cabinet so it won’t get so dusty. Then the Bang and Olufsen rosewood speakers will have a matching wood-species home!

The planter in the picture has now been located  to the kitchen to take advantage of the southern exposure. Will have to take some brasso to that copper planter and restore it to its former glory. We had the foresight (we don’t always ) to mount the cabinet rails high enough so that a chair can be tucked under.  Books, art and tchotchkes will be added, but like most things around the home, a work in progress…
